Fighting climate change: Lower carbon footprint
Nearly half of the world’s clothing is made of polyester and Greenpeace forecasts this amount to nearly double by 2030. Why? The athleisure trend is one of the main reasons behind it: an increasing number of consumers are looking for stretchier, more resistant garments. The problem is, polyester is not a sustainable textile option, as it is made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the most common type of plastic in the world.
In short, we are wearing clothes that come from crude oil. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has called for drastic actions to keep the world's temperature from rising more than 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, and this means we need a major shift in how our society operates if it wants any chance at survival!
Reducing Landfill & Ocean Pollution
A crucial advantage of using recycled polyester over virgin polyester is the reduction of bottles in landfills. Plastic bottles are reused in the fibre production process of recycled polyester and this in turn has major benefits for reducing contamination of the earth as well as water and air pollution. This also means reduced use of petroleum which is used in the creation of virgin polyester.
Recycled polyester results in huge energy savings (of up to 45%) during the fibre production process compared to virgin polyester. Choosing recycled polyester over its virgin counterpart also means a 20% reduction in water consumption and 30% less CO2 emissions.
Time for a change
At Subliminator we care as much as you do about the world we're living in. Therefore we have been working hard behind the scenes to make the switch from virgin polyester to recycled polyester for the majority of our products.
There is a small downside to this major change that we're making, and that is related to the cost of recycled polyester fabrics compared to virgin polyester fabrics. One reason is that virgin polyester is produced in much higher volumes. But international demand is growing and that will help with making recycled polyester price competitive in the long run.
The following products produced from February 10 2022 will be using these 100% recycled fabrics with a slight price increase for some varying between $0.5 - $1.
