Before you start
Personalization lets buyers add their own text or image to your product before checkout.
There are two parts: install the Shopify app block once, then build personalized products in Subliminator.
Personalization must be included in your Membership plan. If you don't see the customizable layer option when designing, check your subscription.
Step 1 — Install the Personalization app block in Shopify
Three ways to do this. Pick whichever is easiest for you.
Option A — From your Subliminator account (fastest)
In Subliminator, go to Stores and users permissions.
Find your Shopify store and scroll to the Personalization section.
Click Add app block.
Your Shopify theme editor opens with the block already added. Click Save.
Option B — From the publishing pop-up
When you publish a product that contains personalized layers, the "Publishing your product…" pop-up shows an Enable personalisation option under What's next?. Click it to add the app block to your theme, then click Save in the theme editor.
Option C — Manually in Shopify
In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize.
Open your product template.
Click Add section, open the Apps tab, and select Personalization by Subliminator.
Click Save.
You only need to do this once per theme. If you switch or duplicate your theme later, add the block again.
You can check our detailed tutorial here: Demo for Personalization.
Customize the button (optional)
Select the block in the theme editor to change the button text and button color so they match your theme, then save.
The position of the block doesn't matter. The block never renders where you place it. On personalized products it replaces your existing Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons with a single personalize button. On regular products nothing changes.
Step 2 — Create a personalized product
In Subliminator, start a new product the same way you would a regular one (for example, a Fashion Hoodie), then click Start designing.
Select the Shopify store you want to publish to.
Add your base design.
Click Add layer → Add customizable layer.
Text layer
Label name — what the buyer sees in the popup, for example "Person's name".
Example text — the placeholder shown by default, for example "Rose".
Position and style the layer on your design.
Image placeholder layer
Defines the area the buyer's uploaded image will fill.
Choose a mask shape — rectangle, heart, and so on.
Generate your mockups.
Add a title, description, and collection if needed.
Set your pricing.
Click Publish.
Step 3 — Check that it works
Open the product on your live store — not the theme preview.
Your default buttons should now be replaced by the personalize button.
Click it. The personalization popup opens, showing the label name and example text you set.
Enter text, upload an image, then adjust its position and size.
Use Preview to see the result, then Add to cart.
How to remove the Personalization app block
Subliminator cannot remove the app block for you. Shopify only allows the store owner to remove a theme block, so this has to be done manually from your Shopify theme editor.
In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize.
Open your product template.
Find Personalization by Subliminator in the section list on the left.
Click the section, then choose Remove section (or click the three dots next to it and select Remove).
Click Save.
Repeat this for every theme that has the block installed, including duplicated or backup themes.
Note: once the block is removed, personalized products in your store will no longer show the personalize button, and customers won't be able to submit their custom text or images. Only remove the block if you've stopped selling personalized products.
Tips
Remind buyers to upload high-resolution images. Low quality uploads print low quality.
Keep label names short and specific — "Name on back" works better than "Text".
Already have a personalized product? Duplicate it instead of rebuilding it from scratch.
